"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."Title IX is about far more than athletics. In fact, equality in sports isn't even mentioned in the original act. It's about making a change in the fundamental way gender is approached. For example, before Title IX, some medical & law schools limited the number of women admitted to 15 or fewer per school. As a member of the team at The Women's Museum, I can say we carry on the fight for gender equality everyday. With its stipulations and limitations, Title IX is the first step - not a direct route to equality.
We still have a fight ahead of us. A fight to dream big and take action - to continue to strive to be Unforgettable Women. We must continue to fight for Equal Pay and not be intimidated to work in male dominated fields.
Today at 2:30 PM ET, the White House will commemorate the passage of Title IX with Unforgettable Women Billie Jean King and Dominique Dawes. I'm looking forward to a celebration of how far we've come and thoughts about where we're going next!
